MALO MEĐIMURJE- SONGS AND DANCES OF MEĐIMURJE

Choreography: Ivan Ivančan
Music: Božo Potočnik

The specialty of Međimurje is the popevka, a folksong included in the UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Monophonic chants performed by female soloists developed into polyphony, later incorporated into dance with musical accompaniment. The centuries-old association of Međimurje with Hungary has left its mark, both in the dance and musical repertoire, especially in the instrument lineup. The dances are accompanied by shouts, the men exchange hats, they follow the rhythm by clapping, patting their boots and stomping their feet on the ground so as to invoke the fertility of the earth.
